Abstract:

Imagine observing someone scratching their arm. Without context, the reason for this action is unclear. However, spotting a mosquito nearby immediately offers a likely explanation, highlighting the importance of subtle visual cues in resolving ambiguity. We introduce the Visual Riddles gallery, featuring 400 images that emphasize this theme of ambiguity. Created using various text-to-image models, each visual riddle consists of a question, an image, an answer, a hint, and an attribution. These visual riddles appear unclear until the subtle clues in the images are noticed. These riddles challenge both human cognition and AI. While humans easily interpret these scenarios, current AI models struggle, revealing gaps in visual commonsense reasoning. The Visual Riddles gallery explores the balance between clarity and ambiguity, emphasizing the evolving relationship between human intelligence, art, and AI. The gallery is presented in https://huggingface.co/spaces/visual-riddles/visual-riddles.
