NIPS Name Change

In the context of diversity questions and anti-harassment policies, the NIPS board is currently discussing the possibility of changing the name of the NIPS conference. The first reason is the unfortunate connotation of the current name, which can invite insinuating comments and make some participants feel uncomfortable.  A second reason is that that the scope and the role of the conference has changed over the years and a new name might be able to reflect this.

Changing the name of a well-established conference such as NIPS has many pros and cons, and no decision whatsoever has been made yet. To help us to make up our minds, we are asking the NIPS community for input. In a first step, we are sending a questionnaire to everybody who has attended NIPS during the last 5 years, asking for potential suggestions of new names. Some weeks later we will then send a second poll asking the same past participants about their opinion regarding the name change in general, and to rate some of the suggested new names. The executive board will then use all the collected material as input to come up with a final decision later this year.

The Thirty-second Annual Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) is a multi-track machine learning and computational neuroscience conference that includes invited talks, demonstrations, symposia and oral and poster presentations of refereed papers. Following the conference, there are workshops which provide a less formal setting.
